A beautiful country inn with award-winning, home-grown food and stylish bedrooms
Welcome to the George and Dragon
Award-winning food, home-grown produce, a warm welcome and lovely bedrooms
Our owner Charles Lowther and his family lovingly restored the George and Dragon in 2008 and it’s now as beloved by locals as it is by visitors to the area. In every way, our roots are embedded deep in the rich history of our surrounding landscape and we’re proud to rear, forage and grow most of the ingredients you’ll see on our menus ourselves, on our family farms and within our kitchen gardens at nearby Askham Hall. You’ll find our field-to-fork approach genuinely ingrained throughout all that we offer; where we can’t provide the produce ourselves, we try to source it locally. Our kitchen is led by Paul McKinnon, an exceptional talent who carefully manages the demands of the seasons to create exceptional dishes.
If you’d like to stay over, we have 14 stylish bedrooms you can choose from… Each is different, individually designed with furniture and art from Charles’ family’s collection, but all have fabulous beds, lovely linens and en suite bathrooms. Most (but not all) of our bedrooms are dog-friendly and we offer Family Rooms too. Secure cycle storage is available.
Our hope is that you’ll find our wine list second to none, our team warm and friendly and our restaurant and bar stylish and welcoming. When it’s cold we’ll have our four fires roaring, or in good weather you’ll find the perfect sun trap along with chunky weathered tables in our private courtyard.
For larger parties we have a private dining room which we can make available to you at no extra cost. It seats up to ten guests. Just give us a call or drop us an email if you’d like us to reserve it for you.
We serve bar lunches from 12.30 to 3pm, and dinner from 5 to 9pm (last orders 8.30pm), Monday to Saturday. We offer lunch on Sundays from 12 to 8pm (last orders 7.30pm). Our bar is open for drinks every day from midday.
We can’t wait to welcome you here.
”I take huge pride in the quality of produce on my family estate and our gardens at Askham Hall and being able to offer people the opportunity to experience and enjoy all it has to offer is wonderful. It’s important for people to know where their food comes from and we can give them not only all the answers but also a place to experience the heritage of the area.

Dogs
We love dogs and have several of our own. Well-behaved pooches are welcome in our bar area, but not in our restaurant and most of our bedrooms* are dog friendly. We have a Doggy Welcome Pack for our overnight canine guests, which includes a treat, a map of local walks and poo bags.
* Please note that all rooms in the main building are dog friendly. However in rooms 12 (Lowther Suite), 14 and 15 are not permitted.
