Things to see and do

The George and Dragon is situated in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, on the edge of the Lake District. The surrounding mountains, rivers, lakes, wildlife and history make this an idyllic spot to visit.

Lowther Castle and Gardens

Just a mile from the George and Dragon is the beautiful Lowther Castle. After years of planning, the restoration of the castle and historic gardens is now in full swing. Visitors can discover the amazing history and beautiful lost gardens that are now being sensitively recreated with a modern interpretation of their former splendour.

Brougham Hall

Brougham Hall was built in the 14th century and has a fascinating history.

Walking and trekking

The George and Dragon is situated on the eastern side of the Lake District; the north eastern fells and Lake Ullswater are only a few miles away.

Mountain biking

Visit Cycle Active - a specialist company run by some of Britain’s leading cycle experts are just a mile down the road from the George and Dragon. They provide bike hire, instruction and guiding. There are plenty of mountain biking trails across the fells for people of all abilities. Cycle Active will provide you with everything you need.

Country sports

The Lowther family has five miles of salmon and trout fishing along the idyllic River Eden. The family also has a beautiful stretch on the River Lowther, famous for its dry fly upstream brown trout. For a fishing permit, enquire when you visit or contact the Lowther Estate office on 01931 712577. Bring what you catch to the George and Dragon and we’ll cook it for you that day, or if you catch a lot, we’ll buy them off you.

Fishing hideaways We like Shank Wood Log Cabin, which offers visitors the chance to experience nature and the countryside, along with enjoying the woodland in an eco-friendly environment.

Clifton village and the Rebel Oak

The George and Dragon is situated in this charming village located on the side of the old A6. Once the main highway north – before the M6 was built – this road is now much quieter. There are a number of nearby woodland trails and the famous Rebel oak tree, where the rebel army of Bonnie Prince Charlie was defeated and driven out of England. Clifton marks the site of the last battle to take place on English soil in 1745 and the Rebel Oak is right behind the pub - please ask inside for directions.
