The Lowther family Estate has been producing meat and vegetables for 800 years. Within the Estate are approximately 70 tenant farms as well as the family’s own farm, Lowther Park – a working farm since 1283. The Estate's 70,000 acres are situated on the north east edge of the English Lake District.
The Lowther family’s home farms are home to a variety of traditional breeds of beef, pork, chicken and lamb, all of which are free range. The cows are pedigree Shorthorns and other native breeds. The pigs are a range of traditional breeds including Hampshire, Gloucester Old Spot and Duroc. The free range organic chickens are an old fashioned slow grow breed specially bred by the Lowther farms out of a mix of old fashioned breeds. We call them Lakeland Rangers. They have more time for roaming and subsequently produce a better flavour.
Kitchen gardens
The kitchen gardens which were once used to produce all the vegetables for the family homes of the Estate are today being cared for by a fulltime gardener. One of the George and Dragon’s previous owners of 20 years ago, Biff Schofield, was once a gardener in the Estate kitchen gardens growing seasonal vegetables to supply the pub.
The George and Dragon is positioned within the Lowther Estate, which is the only Estate producing such a full range of meats and vegetables in the North West. Its produce is available in many local outlets including Booths specialty supermarkets and Cranston’s butchers.
