The Lowther family Estates have been producing meat and vegetables for 800 years. Within the family Estates are approximately 70 tenant farms as well as the family’s own farms, Lowther Park Farms, a working farm since 1283, Nord Vue Farms and Maulds Meaburn. The Estate's 70,000 acres are situated on the north east edge of the English Lake District.
The farms on the Estate are home to a variety of traditional breeds of beef, pork and lamb, all of which are free range. The cows at Nord Vue and Maulds Meaburn are pedigree Shorthorns (bred by the pub owner) and other native breeds and the pigs are a range of traditional breeds including Gloucester Old Spot, Tamworth and Duroc (also bred by the pub owner).
Kitchen gardens
The kitchen gardens which were once used to produce vegetables for the family home of the the Earl of Lonsdale are today being cared for by a fulltime gardener, producing vegetables for the George and Dragon. One of the George and Dragon’s previous owners of 20 years ago, Biff Schofield, was once a gardener in the Estate kitchen gardens growing seasonal vegetables to supply the same pub/restaurant.
The George and Dragon is positioned within the heart of the Lowther family Estates, in the heart of rural Cumbria and the north eastern corner of the Lake District National Park, a traditional livestock producing area.
